Why Madonna Still Matters

Image
Madonna didn't just change music, she changed the meaning of the female pop star. Through her control of image her bold use of sexuality, and her embrace of reinvention, she subverted the norms that tried to constrain her. She showed that femininity could be powerful, that sexuality could be political, and that identity could be performance. Her legacy is not without complication, but it's precisely in those complications that Madonna remains vital. For a contemporary audience navigating gender fluidity, digital identity, and ongoing battles over bodily autonomy, Madonna's career offers a play book, and a provocation.  Madonna didn't just push boundaries, she redrew them.
